To celebrate world whiskey day we had the privilege of being the first whiskey society to visit Knappogue castle! We had a fantastic welcome from Travel Retail and Marketing Manager Gillian Stewart who, along with Global Brand Ambassador, Tony Carroll treated us to a Knappogue Castle Masterclass.
After a tour of the castle with Terence, our guide, we ended up in the banquet hall which was the perfect setting to sample the Knappogue range.
Knappogue Castle 12 Year Old Single Malt
43% ABV, Ex-bourbon cask. Flavours of lemon, fresh apples, candied fruits and delicate spices. Rich and spicy on the finish.
Knappogue Castle 14 Year Old Single Malt Twin Wood
46% ABV, Ex-bourbon and Oloroso casks. This is both richer and more complex than the standard twelve year old Knappogue Castle. Hints of green apple with the zest of grapefruit plus
sweet vanilla with light tannins from the charred oak.
Knappogue Castle 16 Year Old Single Malt
43% ABV, Ex-bourbon for at least 14 years and then finished Oloroso casks to complete a minimum of 16 years. This adds nutty and complex sherry notes. Deep and complex with sherry maltiness along with fruity and slightly sweet notes.
Knappogue Castle 21 Year Old Single Malt
46% ABV. Exclusively aged in B1 bourbon casks for at least 21 years. Limited to only 1,200 bottles. A powerfully complex whiskey that really shows off what can be achieved by just bourbon aging. Soft and mellow with further depth and complexity owing to the long maturation period in oak, while the malty sweetness remains consistent throughout.
Knappogue Castle 12 Year Old Single Malt Pichon Baron Cask Finish
46% ABV. The Chateau Pichon Baron limited release is matured in bourbon barrels for a minimum of 12 years, then further aged in casks from the renowned Bordeaux winery. This one is juicy, soft and light. Sweet, berry fruit coming through with some red apple, strawberry and finishes with hints of vanilla, mocha and spice.
Knappogue Castle 12 Year Old Single Barrel Program Cask Strength
54.4% ABV. The yet to be released cask strength.
There was also a chance to sample the Jefferson Ocean. A unique Bourbon whiskey which has been partly aged at sea with the barrels crossing the equator four times and visiting five different continents. The ageing at sea has given the whiskey some subtle salty notes alongs with caramel toffee notes and hints of spice. 45% ABV.
